Government considering offering €500 'staycation' voucher to households to save tourism sector

The Government is considering a €500 staycation voucher scheme to kickstart the tourism sector.

The project would give every household in the country a free voucher that must be spent at home on activities officially registered with our own tourism bodies.

Hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and outdoor activities would all be part of the scheme being presented by the ITIC (Irish Tourism Industry Confederation).

The plan is currently being considered after being submitted to the three parties currently engaged in new government formation negotiations, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Greens.

Irish Tourism Industry Confederation chief Eoghan O’Mara said: “We have been hit very hard by the coronavirus, primarily because 75% of our business is international - that is gone.

“That is why we are arguing for a Government stimulus.”

It comes as Failte Ireland release the guidelines for hotels and guesthouses for when they reopen later this month.

Last Friday Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced his plans to begin reopening the tourism and hospitality sector on June 29 as part of changes to phase three of the roadmap.

With guidelines in place for safety purposes it's clear that guests staying in hotels, guesthouses or B&B's will notice some changes.

While in the hotel Guests must be advised to stand at least 2 metres away from people who are not from the same household at all times.

Areas where guests or employees are required to queue will clearly marked for social distancing. This includes drop-off areas, check-in, check-out, reception, elevator lobbies, public areas, dining and Back of House

Before they book or arrive, guests must briefed beforehand on the guidelines in place.

Theatre capacity and seating will be reduced to allow for distancing between groups of guests.

In swimming pools which will remain closed until they're due to be allowed to open in phase 4, a rigorous cleaning and sanitation routine will be followed. Guests will also be encouraged to change in their hotel rooms as opposed to poolside changing areas.
