Government considering adding extra bank holiday in 2021

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said the government is considering introducing an extra bank holiday in 2021.

Mr Martin said the bank holiday could give recognition to those who have worked tirelessly throughout the battle against Covid-19.

And it had been previously discussed as a way to mark the challenges the hospitality and tourism industry had faced throughout the year.

The extra holiday break could help boost both sectors once the country was in a position to reopen as the vaccine programme is rolled out in 2021.

When asked about reports of an extra bank holiday that had been mooted earlier in the year, Mr Martin said: “We’ll consider it.”

He added: “I think that is one potential, yes, that we could do in terms of reflecting and acknowledging the work of many workers in different fields and in different sectors, and which I referenced earlier in my speech."

However, he did not reveal what month the government would consider introducing the extra holiday.

Cabinet Minister Simon Harris had previously said once the country gets through the pandemic there would be some benefit in having a day to recognise people’s efforts.
