Government changes rules on Christmas trees and turkeys

Christmas tree farms along with specialist retailers and stalls can now reopen in England despite the current lockdown rules, which are in place until December 2.

Tree sellers were forced to stay shut under the current legislation which means all non-essential retailers have to close until lockdown ends on December 2.

But over the weekend the Government changed the rules, meaning people can now buy their Christmas trees.

The rule change now classifies people who sell Christmas trees as essential retailers.

The change came after pressure from the British Christmas Tree Growers' Association. Trees have been on sale through supermarkets, garden centres and DIY chains.

The BCTA's 320 members sell eight million trees a year.

The Government has also changed the rules for seasonal workers coming into the UK to slaughter and pluck turkeys for Christmas.

They will not be required to quarantine on arrival for 14 days.

Around 5,500 people come to the UK from eastern Europe every year to process turkeys.
