Government asks civic bodies to stop encroachments

Ahmedabad: The rising number of illegal buildings on municipality owned land in smaller towns of the state has raised an alarm.

The state urban development department in its 10 January and June order has reiterated that despite several notices the construction of illegal commercial buildings on municipality land has not stopped across major municipalities.

The letter has been written to Sanand and Bavla nagarpalikas as well.

The letter by deputy secretary BK Bhoi of the state urban development department has required that every estate officer in each of the municipalities should visit each of the municipal plots at least one a month and submit a report regarding the status of the land.

The letter further states, “Any encroachment on the municipal owned land will be the responsibility of the relevant estate officer in charge of the zone or area.”

A senior state urban development official admitted that complaints of illegal buildings coming up on land that had been cleared of the encroachment within a year was one of the reasons why the letter was written to individual municipalities in the state.
