Government 'actively looking' at Liverpool City Region gym closures

The government is 'actively looking' at complaints regarding the closures of gyms in the Liverpool City Region, the ECHO understands.

There is anger across the region at the fact Tier 3 restrictions here have meant the enforced closure of gyms and leisure centres, with different rules for other areas falling under the same tier.

Lancashire's Tier 3 measures have allowed gyms to remain open and while Greater Manchester's Tier 3 restrictions are still being unveiled, gyms have yet to feature in the press conference addressing measures that will be enforced in the region.

The leaders of the Liverpool City Region have written to Boris Johnson to demand an immediate review into why its gyms are being treated differently than other regions and to provide any scientific evidence to back up the decision.

In their letter, regional leaders said if the government failed to provide any evidence, then local leaders should be given the power to reopen gyms if they believe its safe.

The ECHO understands that Downing Street has now responded to the letter to say that it is actively looking at the issues raised.

Local leaders have repeatedly and robustly denied government claims that they asked for or suggested gym closures should be part of the package - and said instead that they questioned what the science was behind the move.

Today, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram tweeted to say: "The only consultation we had was Government telling us "we're putting you in Tier 3 and that means closing gyms."

"There needs to be some consistency: gyms are either safe or they aren't. If the Government can't produce that evidence, they should let our gyms open."
