Govanhill People's Food Pantry launched this week to tackle food inequality

A new People's Food Pantry opened this week in the heart of Govanhill.

Despite a delayed launch due to coronavirus, the Pantry finally opened on Monday.

The Pantry will provide ongoing support to people facing food insecurity.

Anyone living in the G41/G42 postcode areas can become a member of The People’s Pantry for £3.50 a year. They can then do a weekly shop for £2.50, which will provide a minimum of £15 worth of food.

Members also have the option of paying a solidarity price of £3.50 per shop, to fund a small number of subsidised memberships.

The Pantry will stock a range of essential items, from store cupboard staples, like pasta, tinned tomatoes, and coffee, to fruit and vegetables, and baked goods.

Produce will be supplied by a number of sources, the majority coming via FareShare, a food redistribution charity, and member subscriptions will be used to provide fresh produce on top of the usual basket of goods.

The People's Pantry aims to tackle food insecurity, it will also help reduce food waste and negative environmental impacts.

The project was launched by the Govanhill Baths Community Trust along with other organisations in the area.

Anyone interested in becoming a member can pop into the Pantry to fill in an application form. They will need to see some form of ID, (e.g. a driving licence or passport) and proof of address (e.g .a utility bill) to process the application, but if anyone doesn't have access to these, then other options can be discussed.
