Funding of £77,000 from the Glasgow City Region Deal is expected to be granted to the Govan Heritage Trust to help redevelop Govan Old Church .
If approved the ground floor of the historic A-listed building will be transformed into lettable office space and would be part of the first phase in the £5.7 million project creating 70 new jobs.
Work on this part of the project – which would accommodate a further 24 new jobs in three office suites – is expected to begin in August 2019 with completion in March 2020.
Govan Old Church, which closed in 2007, is closely linked to the £55 million proposal to redevelop Water Row, with new homes, commercial office and retail space, and community, leisure and other uses there.
The Govan Old campus will also feature a community facility and visitor centre showcasing the Govan Stones, a collection of medieval burial stones of national significance, with this cultural asset being supported by business space generating income to sustain the business in the long-term.
Planning studies over the last decade have acknowledged that the re-development of Water Row will play a pivotal role in the regeneration of Central Govan and the transformation of the city’s waterfront.
The re-development of Govan Old Church has been described as critical to the successful regeneration of that area of the River Clyde while creating a cross-river cultural quarter.
When the church was closed Govan Workspace produced a business plan which identified a long-term vision for the building as a community facility.
While these proposals are expected to be approved by the city administration committee on Thursday, funding will be subject to further approval from the Glasgow city region cabinet at the end of the month.
