Govan gas leak prompts emergency road closure and evacuation of residents

A major gas leak has taken place in Govan, prompting the emergency closure of a street and the evacuation of residents in the area.

The alarm was raised around 8:30pm this evening at a block of flats on Govan Road, with Scottish Fire & Rescue Service confirming that four appliances remain at the scene.

An eyewitness told Glasgow Live that a full block of residents had been evacuated due to "a Co2 leak in a tenement block next to the Lyceum", with firefighters "in breathing apparatus" present at the scene.

Glasgow City Council's Traffic Control & Management team TRAFFCOM issued a bulletin around 10:45pm this evening which said: "Due to an ongoing incident, Govan Road is closed from the junction of Govan Road/Golspie Street/Napier Road to junction of Govan Road/Golspie Street/Howat Street.

"Emergency Services are in attendance and this location should be avoided where possible.  Further bulletins will be issued as more information becomes available".

A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire & Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 8:28pm concerning a gas incident at Govan Road in Glasgow and we have four appliances in attendance."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
