Gousto has created a range of festive sandwiches from around the world

Research by recipe box Gousto has found that almost half (46%) of the nation feel that food is the most important part of Christmas, with a further half (47%) agreeing it's a time to get creative in the kitchen.

Over a third of Brits (36%) start to feel the yearly festive spirit when the Christmas sandwiches launch, with over half (52%) of us are definitely planning to enjoy one this year.

To honour the cult following of the Christmas sandwich, Gousto has created a range of festive sandwiches that are packed full of delicious flavours from around the world.

The Indian Christmas Naanwich - Tandoori chicken (or paneer) and cranberry tamarind chutney is wrapped in a stone baked naan with spiced roast potatoes and crispy golden parsnips.

The German Christmas Sandwich - A German market inspired sandwich crammed with sausage (or meat-free sausages), Brussels sprouts and cranberry slaw all topped with a curry ketchup.

The Mexican Christmas Burrito - Festive pork (or meat-free) mince , spiced rice, crispy coriander and lime stuffing, plus lashings of sour cream wrapped in a soft flour tortilla and all scooped up with crunchy tortilla chips.

The Vietnamese Christmas Sandwich - Beef (or meat-free) gingery meatballs rest on a bed of pickled parsnip and carrot, stuffed in a toasted ciabatta and coated with creamy mayo and cranberry sauce, served with a side of sage sweet potato fries.

To complete the range, the recipe box will be revealing a Crowd Sauce sandwich on November 19 that will include a twist on a frequently wasted Christmas ingredient, voted for by their social media community.

Gousto’s Crowd Sauced Christmas sandwich will teach home-cooks how to use their festive leftovers and reduce their waste this season with almost a quarter (22%) of Brits wishing they knew more ways to tackle food waste at Christmas. 23% of those struggling with cooking confidence blame a lack of knowledge, while 13% worry about making festive leftovers taste good.

When asked about how food waste at Christmas makes them feel, 24% of people feel angry and guilty (23%), while 24% are reminded of how fortunate they are to have food to waste.

On average, British households spend £84.59 on their Christmas dinner, and it takes an average of 2.3 days to finish all the food from the festivities. What’s more, almost one in three families (30%) are still searching for ways to use up their leftover Christmas food up to four days later.
