
Police have arrested and charged a 29-year-old man who is alleged to have escaped from a correctional facility at Goulburn on Thursday.
The man, who is believed to have escaped from the facility about 1.30pm, was arrested by officers while waiting for a train at Goulburn Railway Station.
He was taken to Goulburn Police Station where he was charged with three offences, including inmate escape from lawful custody, attempt to unlawfully take motor vehicle with person in it and assault with intent to take and drive a motor vehicle.
The man was refused bail and will appear before Goulburn Local Court on Friday.
Police allege he escaped while he was working at the back of the prison complex.
The Goulburn Post has reported the man was working on demountable classrooms at the northern end of the prison when he jumped a fence.
Saint Joseph's and Goulburn North Public School went into lockdowns on Thursday afternoon as a result.
He was serving a three-year sentence for domestic violence-related offences. His earliest release date was March, 2023.
The officer in charge at Goulburn Police Station, Inspector Matt Hinton, said the man was "assisting police with their inquiries".
