An impressive 2.5-meter-tall skeletal replica of the Pokemon Tyrantrum stands in a museum exhibit that notes the Pokemon was based on the Tyrannosaurus rex.

A new exhibit at the Mikasa City Museum in Hokkaido compares characters from Pokemon to their real-life inspirations. Called the "Pokemon Fossil Museum," the exhibit runs until Sept. 20.

The exhibit has eight models of Pokemon on display, with signboards comparing the Pokemon to ancient creatures. It also introduces about 30 items pertaining to archeology, such as amber and excavation tools.

"I hope both kids and the young at heart will come and develop an interest in fossils through Pokemon," said Keisuke Aiba, who is in charge of the exhibit.

To help prevent the spread of coronavirus infections, entry to the museum is strictly limited to those who make a reservation through the museum's website prior to their visit.
