Gothic mansion under two hours from Edinburgh going under the hammer for £1

Have you always dreamed of embarking on a property restoration project but lacked the funds?

If the answer is yes, then you might want to look beyond the real estate agencies and try your hand at auction.

The latest gem to go under the hammer is a Gothic mansion, nestled just under two hour's drive from Edinburgh in Arbroath.

An A-listed country mansion The Elms, with its impressive pointed arches, is characteristic of the French Gothic style.

But, as beautiful as it is, there's a catch as the abandoned building has fallen into complete disrepair.

In a past life, the house belonged to a wealthy mill-owner before coming a hotel and finally a children’s home but it has since been left to rot.

The auctioneers say the building, which has been boarded up, is in a “poor” state. It even features on the Buildings at Risk Register - which records buildings of national architectural or historic interest that are considered to be under threat.

National Property Auctions recommends anyone thinking of making a bid should take legal advice first, reports the Daily Record.

However, if you're up for a challenge, the lack of reserve price on this place means you could bag a bargain, as it means that if £1 is the highest bid then it will sell for just that.

Managing director Mandi Cooper said: “This property is a massive opportunity for a developer to restore the building to its former glory.

“The Elms was built for the mill-owning Corsar family. It operated as a hotel until World War II, when it was requisitioned by the War Office, before becoming a children’s home.”

Bids must be made at nationalpropertyauctions.co.uk by 11am on July 17.
