Gotham Town: Newcastle remembers cheap trebles, sticky floors - and 'falling asleep in the toilet'

Even some of the regulars branded it the "dingiest bar in Newcastle ".

But it is safe to say Gotham Town made a big impression on the punters.

After almost 30 years, RIP Gotham Town: £3 trebles are no more as beloved Newcastle bar shuts - and its £3 trebs.

But while it may be gone, it has left the punters with some memories they can treasure forever.

"I once fell asleep in the toilets there and got locked in," posted Jacqui Farrell on ChronicleLive's Facebook page.

And another, David Hall, recalled buying three tequilas.

"I downed them all then barfed up at the bar," he recalled.

So maybe it wasn't exactly the Ritz - but it held a special place in a lot of people's hearts.

"Another legendary bar gone," posted Paul Toase.

"Drew me in like a moth to light every time."

Others eulogised the hydraulic table, the banging tunes and - of course - the cheap booze.

But most people seemed to recall 'those' floors.

"I had to wipe my feet after I left," recalled Andy Jay - and at least a dozen others.

And it wasn't just the floors, which Racheal Fountain stated left an "unknown black goo sticking permanently" to her shoes.

She also recalled "all but one toilet" either had a lock missing - or even a door.

It was those same toilets that in the mid-2000s hit headlines for selling cheap sex toys out of a machine.

While the owners Crafted Projects are yet to confirm their plans for the unit, they've hinted those scenes may become a thing of the past.

The firm owns more upmarket nearby venues, such as Central Oven and Shaker, which has been a hit since opening.

But for some, the demise of Gotham Town - which always found a fanbase over three decades - represented a sad day.

"Definitely needs a refurb but the music was cracking," posted Lisa Simpson.

"Let's hope it doesn't turn into one another one of these pretentious overpriced bars like the rest of town."

But for some, the bar - named after Batman's home city - had simply ran its course.

"Gotham was great when it opened," admitted Graham Parker.

"But it soon turned into Arkham."
