Got any family from Scotland? You could inherit thousands from unclaimed estates

Searching for your surname on a list of unclaimed Scottish estates could be the first step to you inheriting as much as £370,000.

The Government has published a spreadsheet of estates across Scotland owned by people who died without making a will or naming a next of kin to inherit their assets.

If someone dies north of the border without making a will or naming someone to inherit their fortune, the Office of Queen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer takes care of their assets. The office published the list to try and identify relatives to inherit the fortunes. Since 2016, it has been easier to claim unwanted estates, thanks to the Scottish Parliament removing a requirement to obtain "bond of caution" insurance when submitting claims.

If no next of kin are identified, the estates including property, money, cars and more, are handed to the Crown.

One way to check if any of your possible relatives left unclaimed estates is to search for surnames in your family tree. If you've got a Sutherland in your family, you could be the rightful heir to £370,720.67, left by Louise Sutherland, of Edinburgh, who died in March 2016 without leaving a will.

There are a total of 93 estates on the list which have left more than £10,000 in assets. Anyone related to Lascelles McPherson, who died in the Scottish capital in March of this year, could claim their £140,000 estate, while Polish-born Lucyna Waleria died in Glasgow without naming a next of kin to inherit their £123,000.

There are many common surnames on the list, including Clark, Simpson, Walsh, Henderson and Brown.
