'Gorgeous' toddler dies on Boxing Day after swallowing button-type battery

A toddler tragically died after accidentally swallowing a button-type battery.

Hugh McMahon, from Motherwell, was rushed to hospital after accidentally swallowing the battery on Christmas Eve.

Despite medics’ best efforts to save his life, the ingestion had caused too much damage to Hugh’s body and the 17-month-old tot passed away in his parents arms on Boxing Day, Lanarkshire Live reports.

The toddler’s heartbroken parents, Christine and Hugh McMahon, have asked motorcyclists to provide a funeral escort for their son’s final journey next Thursday, January 27 as a tribute to him, since he loved motorcycles.

Trieda Hill, owner of the popular Route 66 Motorcycle diner in Motherwell, who has been tasked with organising the funeral escort, told Lanarkshire Live:

"Gorgeous Hugh sadly lost his life at only 17-months-old very suddenly on Boxing Day.

"He adored motorbikes and his family contacted me in the hope that a few motorcycle riders would give up some time to accompany the hearse from the church and then to the cemetery for his final farewell.

"If anyone could help make this happen for the McMahons it would mean the world to all the family."

Mourners and riders have also been asked to wear a little something blue, such as a ribbon, in memory of Hugh.

The bikes are asked to be at Route 66 from 12.15pm next Thursday, so as not to block the traffic on the main road outside the church while mourners arrive.

From there they will travel to Motherwell Baptist Church and then on to Hugh’s final resting place in Eastfields Cemetery.

Trieda added: "The family would like to thank you in advance to anyone who can make it on the day."
