Gordon Strachan makes Ryan Kent comparison that will excite Leeds United fans amid transfer links

Former Leeds United captain Gordon Strachan has previously gone on record as comparing Whites transfer target Ryan Kent with Liverpool sensation Sadio Mane.

The Rangers winger, who has scored three goals in the opening five games of the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership season, has emerged as a surprise target for the Whites, with the West Yorkshire club having already seen a £10m bid for the winger rebuffed.

Reports in the national media say that the Whites, who are less than three weeks away from kicking-off their 2020/21 Premier League campaign, are readying a second offer for the former Barnsley loanee, which is claimed to be around £14m.

Kent, though, is not the only left winger to have been heavily linked with a summer switch to Elland Road, with the 2019/20 Championship title winners having also been closely linked with a move for Brentford sensation Said Benrahma.

But with the Bees reportedly holding out for a fee of more than £20million for the Algerian sensation, a move for Kent seems more likely, even though Rangers are not keen on the prospect of losing him this summer.

However, if Leeds' hierarchy are to take any notice of former skipper Strachan's advice, they may be willing to push Rangers all the way in an attempt to lure Kent to Elland Road.

That is because he has been previously compared to Liverpool forward Mane, who has established himself as one of the very best attackers in world football in recent years.

Strachan made the claim last December after Kent netted a sublime opener in Rangers' 2-1 away win over Old Firm rivals Celtic, insisting he plays the same role as the Senegal international.

"Steven [Gerrard] has taken a lot from Jurgen Klopp, which is fantastic – all coaches takes things from others – and I’ve done the same, having watched Klopp’s sessions six or seven years ago," Strachan told Paddy Power, as quoted by the Daily Star, last December.

“The way Steven and Gary McAllister have set Rangers up is very clever. When they signed Ryan Kent, most of us were assuming that he’d be played as a left winger.

“Instead, he’s in a Sadio Mane role, as an old fashioned inside forward, with Joe Aribo on the other side.

"Like Liverpool, the width comes from the full backs. It’s a lovely system, as it means that you have five players in the centre of the field – which determines that you win most of the ball."
