Gordon Smith claims Rangers could refuse to play at Rugby Park as 'payback' over ticket cut

Former SFA chief Gordon Smith believes Rangers could refuse to play at Rugby Park as "payback" for Kilmarnock cutting their ticket allocation.

Killie announced earlier on Monday the Ibrox club would not receive customary seats in the Moffat Stand and would only be housed in the Chadwick Stand for the May 19 clash.

The number of away fans will therefore drop from around 8000 to 4000 as Killie look to increase the number of home supporters for a planned celebration of their 150th anniversary.

Rangers later hit back at the revelation and suggested they could refuse future allocations in light of Killie's decision.

But now, in a bizarre claim on PLZ Soccer , former Ibrox star Smith believes Rangers could boycott travelling to Rugby Park altogether - an extreme move that would likely land them in hot water with the authorities.

Smith said: "I can understand, to a degree, why they (Kilmarnock) have done, but I can also understand why Rangers would be annoyed.

"What they're saying is 'we sell all these tickets for you this season, you get big crowds, we bring in a fair bit of money for you and now all of a sudden you're halving our allocation? We'll see if we take any future allocations in the stand'.

Rangers hit back at Kilmarnock ticket cut as they threaten to refuse full allocation next season

"Rangers might even say 'we won't come and play at Rugby Park anymore'. And that would be a big loss financially for Kilmarnock and that would be Rangers paying them back for what they're doing to them."

Killie made the call with a view to enhancing the experience for their fans and revealed the decision had been taken following feedback from supporters.

Major shareholder Billy Bowie said in a statement: "Kilmarnock FC is a family club and we want to make sure Rugby Park is an enjoyable and safe environment for people to enjoy watching football.

"As promised, we have worked with and listened to feedback from our leading supporters' groups in a real effort to encourage and inspire the next generation of Killie fans.

"After the game we're encouraging all Killie fans to stay in the stadium and watch one of the most memorable Killie teams in recent memory complete their traditional lap of honour complete with a few words from our manager Steve Clarke."

And Rangers swiftly responded with a statement of their own.

An Ibrox spokesman said: "We are disappointed with the decision, which will force us to consider carefully what application we will seek for future matches at Rugby Park."
