Gordon Ramsay says Gary Rhodes did '400 push-ups for breakfast' in emotional documentary

Celebrity chefs paid tribute to Gary Rhodes during Saturday's emotional documentary, where Gordon Ramsay opened up about the late food star following his tragic death.

And Gordon revealed the late restaurateur did "400 push ups for breakfast" after a gruelling 5am wake-up ahead of his jam-packed busy schedule.

Gary Rhodes: The First Rock Star Chef aired on ITV on Saturday and saw Gordon Ramsay join Ainsley Harriott and GBBO's Candice Brown to speak about the iconic star.

Sitting down to pay tribute to Gary, Gordon recalled: "You know he told me once he was doing something like 400 push ups... for breakfast.

"He said, 'what do you do?' I said a bowl of porridge."

Later on in the doc, Gordon also insisted Gary was a 'genius'.

After fellow stars gushed over Gary being television's first superstar chef, Gordon added: "Behind that facade and behind all the gel, was a real genius of a chef."

"He opened the door for so many of us."

Gordon explained how in the 90s chefs couldn't be both talented in the restaurant and on TV but "this guy managed to do both."

He added: "He was the real deal. He really knew his onions!"

After Gary's two sons admitted that their late dad, who shockingly died last November, took a "lifetime" to get ready, celebs shared their loving memories of the chef.

Celebrity chefs' gushing over Gary Rhodes distinctive style came after the celebrity chef collapsed at home before being rushed to hospital where he died two days later in November last year.

He died aged 59 while filming for his new ITV daytime cookery show in Dubai.

The footage is being used in today's ITV documentary – Gary Rhodes: The First Rock Star Chef.

Once he finished filming last November, he returned to his flat in Dubai’s luxury Grosvenor House hotel, where his restaurant – Rhodes W1 – is situated.

After showering and eating a snack with Jennie, Gary suffered a bleed on the brain and died in hospital.

The timing of his death was particularly poignant as he had been excitedly planning for the future and was “buzzing” about his return to British TV.
