Gordon Ramsay's Bank Balance fans staggered as contestants mistake Africa for a country

Gordon Ramsay 's Bank Balance viewers were left shouting at their TVs after a pair of contestants mistook Africa for a country.

The celebrity chef has returned to TV fronting a new game show for the BBC.

During yesterday's episode, couple Caroline and Andrew from Kent were the first contestants trying to win some cash.

The pair struggled to find the right answers after being asked to name three countries where tigers are native species.

Andrew guessed Africa, but Caroline wasn't sure, asking him: "Africa? Tigers in Africa?"

They put forward India as their first answer, but kept coming back to Africa - forcing Gordon, 54, to step in and explain to them that Africa is a continent not a country.

The presenter told them: "Africa is not a country, it is a continent and they don’t have tigers there."

Viewers couldn't believe it, and took to Twitter to express their thoughts, with one joking: "Africa a country what a Wally eh Gordon."

Another wrote: "Africa is a COUNTRY! Fun fact, #Lions #Tigers & #Bears are all on different continents! #bankbalance."

A third added: " #bankbalance No, Africa is not a Country it is a Continent and there are no wild Tigers there, but apart from that, great answer."

One more added: "Anybody else shouting 'AFRICA ISN'T A COUNTRY!!' just then? #BankBalance."

And another tweeted: "One of my pet peeves is when people call Africa a country. It’s not a country, it’s a continent! #BankBalance."

Despite seemingly getting back on track after the tiger question, the pair ended up walking away empty-handed after failing to win any cash.

Gordon's new show debuted on the BBC last month, with a primetime 9pm slot on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

This series concludes at the end of the week and will end with a celebrity special for Comic Relief.

The BBC has yet to confirm if the show will return for a second run after suffering lacklustre ratings.
