Gordon Ramsay has hit back at critics who slammed him for eating a “delicious” guinea pig.
The TV chef has defended himself after he tucked into the dish in his new National Geographic documentary series Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, which launched on Sunday.
The very first episode saw the 52-year-old chef visit Peru, and during his trip, he ate a plate full of guinea pigs that had been cooked to various stages.
Describing the delicacy as "pretty good" and tasting like "a suckling pig”, he said: "You do not know what you're missing. I am telling you now, delicious.”
However, Ramsay pointed that he would not be able to put , guinea pigs – a stable dish in Peru – on menus in his restaurant in the US.
“I would be taken down,” he added.
After the programme aired, several viewers took to Twitter to express their discomfort and fury at Ramsay for eating what is usually considered a household pet in the UK.
One social media user said: “My mother left the room after she saw the guinea pigs.”
“HARD PASS”, said another.
“I realise people eat different things all over the world, they have to due to region, economics, etc. But being a guinea pig owner and lover I can’t watch Gordon Ramsay’s new show. Those poor sweet pigs,” a third user added.
In response to the online backlash, Ramsay tweeted a news article about him describing guinea pigs as “delicious” today, writing: “Yup and worms when prepared correctly.”

Later in the series, viewers will be able to see Ramsay travel to Laos where he was filmed drinking a shot of whisky that had been marinated in a jar full of geckos.
