Gordon Brown's catchphrase: Say what you see

Think of a catchphrase and you tend to think of "just like that" or "freedom for Tooting", but today the Guardian reveals one you probably have not heard before.

The originator of the latest catchphrase is none other than the prime minister, Gordon Brown.

"The problem is that, in comparison with Bruce Forsyth's 'Nice to see you!', the expression 'fiscal arithmetic' lacks a certain lightness of touch," Mark Lawson notes dryly.

Yes, Brown's new catchphrase is "fiscal arithmetic", according to Lawson, who notes that "on one occasion he said it three times in the same sentence" - in a BBC1 interview with Andrew Marr.

It may not be rolling off the tongues of the nation's youth, but at least Alistair Darling will be relieved. After all, it could have been: "That's another fine mess you got me into [chancellor]."

If you have got a better suggested catchphrase for the prime minister, please share it with us.

This is an edited extract from the Wrap, our daily digest of the papers.
