Gordon Banks save against Pele: The England legend's iconic save that was hailed as the best ever

It was the save seen around the world.

The two best teams in the world, the best forward in the world against the best goalkeeper in the world and Gordon Banks came out on top.

Four years earlier, Banks and England had been crowned world champions for the first - and still only - time but it was Mexico in 1970 how Banks will be remembered by most.

On June 7 in Guadalajara, world champions England faced eventual 1970 winners Brazil in the group stage.

With the scores still goalless in the first half, Selecao captain Carlos Alberto sent Jairzinho charging down the ring wing. Jairzinho beat Terry Cooper to whip a cross towards Pele, the greatest scorer in the world met the ball with his head.

Banks dived to his right and scooped the ball, which was heading towards the bottom corner, up and over the bar with one hand.

Pele would later say: "From the moment I headed it, I was sure it had gone in. I had already began to jump to celebrate the goal. Then I looked back and I couldn't believe it hadn't gone in."

Despite being world champion, Banks accepted that save - in a game which England lost 1-0 - would be his legacy.

He said: "It's something that people will always remember me for. They won't remember me for winning the World Cup, it'll be for that save. That's how big a thing it is. People just want to talk about that save."

Upon news of Banks's death, Sir Bobby Charlton said: "Even though I was on the pitch and have seen it many times since, I still don’t know how he saved that header from Pele."
