Gordie Mutch secures "one of the best" wins in his career in Belgium

Gordie Mutch secured one of the biggest wins in his racing career in Belgium at the weekend.

The talented 20-year-old from Lockerbie took part in the Classic Spa 6 Hours at the world-famous circuit.

He, along with team-mates Alasdair McCaig and Andrew Smith, drove John Clark’s Jaguar E-type to victory in the GT class and came 10th overall.

Mutch said: “The whole weekend was absolutely fantastic.

“That’s got to be one of the best wins in my career. I’ve driven Spa before in the Ginetta series in 2018 so it has been a while.

“But I’ve never driven in the dark or in the rain at Spa before. So it was an awful lot of fun in the car.

“I drove the middle sector for two hours and 15 minutes so I went from day time to night time during my session. It was challenging but I loved it.”

After arriving in Belgium on Wednesday, testing and qualifying took place over Thursday and Friday with Mutch and co in fifth place.

Alasdair McCaig started the day and brought the car back in fifth place before handing over to Mutch. He took the car into the lead in his stint and that’s where they remained until Andrew Smith brought the car back at 9.55pm.

The Classic offers something a little bit different from modern driving.

Mutch explained: “The driver has to fill up the car which is very different.

“It’s a 100 litre, the Jaguar, so it takes some time and the marshal can only help you get strapped back into the car. You have to open the fuel valve and fill the car up yourself.

“It was such a great weekend I loved it. Credit goes to Andrew and Alasdair for their sterling drives and Valley Motorsport for preparing the car too.”

Mutch is backed by the Eco Group, John Clark Motor Group, Sparco and Bell.
