LUCKNOW: Murtaza Abbasi, who’s accused of attacking two provincial armed constabulary jawans outside Gorakhnath temple, suffered ragging and humiliation during his stint at IIT-Bombay, his father told interrogators on Sunday. Murtaza’s remand ends on Monday and will be produced in court.
Sources said, father of accused, Munir Abbasi, disclosed his son wanted to quit the B.Tech course at IIT and return home. In the second year, he left the hostel and began staying with his father in Mumbai.
“He would stay awake all night and cry. In the morning, he would go to the IIT campus without having breakfast and I would accompany him. He had no friends and this continued for years,” his father told the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) personnel. Munir’s statements would be verified, said sources. His mother, Bilkis Bano, broke down during questioning by women cops at ATS headquarters here.
Sources privy to the probe also said Murtaza was not cooperating with investigators and sleuths are awaiting the report by psychological experts.
ATS also summoned Murtaza’s uncle, Dr Khaled Abbasi, a general surgeon who owns a clinic in Gorakhpur, but he cited his advanced age and illness to skip questioning. The surgeon wrote to the ATS, stating he was above 65 years of age and his health did not permit travel. He requested his statement be recorded in Gorakhpur. An ATS team visited Gorakhpur on Sunday.
Sources said, senior officials are mulling slapping Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) on him and could request the court for extension of remand.
Earlier, the IIT-Bombay graduate had told interrogators that he wanted to pursue computer science to help radicalize individuals and highlight the injustice meted out to minorities.
