GOP Senate candidates cash out at Mar-a-Lago

Republican Senate candidates have flocked to Mar-a-Lago in recent months to raise funds for their campaigns, and the results have been lucrative, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: The Trump campaign faces a fundraising deficit against President Biden, but his influence and estate have continued to be a cash cow for GOP candidates close to the former president.

Driving the news: Arizona Republican Kari Lake, a top Trump ally, raised $1 million at a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser on Wednesday, a source familiar with the event told Axios.

  • Republican Bernie Moreno, who won a contentious GOP Senate primary in Ohio last month, raised around $350,000 during a fundraiser at Trump's residence this year.
  • Indiana Republican Jim Banks has also fundraised at Mar-a-Lago for his Senate campaign, which he is likely to win.

Yes, but: Not all Republican candidates who have gotten Trump's support have taken advantage of the Mar-a-Lago cash infusion.

  • Wisconsin Republican Eric Hovde, who picked up an endorsement from Trump last weekend, has yet to fundraise at Mar-a-Lago. Hovde's team says there aren't currently plans for him to do so.

Behind the scenes: One Trump ally told Axios that the Mar-a-Lago fundraisers are successful for GOP candidates because "the biggest donors in GOP politics, and the most fervent MAGA supporters, hail in Palm Beach."
