The Republican party’s hand in overturning Roe v. Wade will cost women their lives. If you don’t believe that then just listen to the story of Republican Representative Kat Cammack. Last year she went through an ectopic pregnancy that would have likely killed her but according to her it’s the pro-choice folks and the Democrats who are to blame for her near death. Go figure.
Cammack serves as the Representative for Florida’s 3rd congressional district. Abortions after 6 weeks are banned in her state thanks to Roe v. Wade being reversed. There are some exceptions of course, but generally, getting an abortion in Florida is borderline impossible with such a harsh deadline to make such a significant choice.
What happened to Kat Cammack?
Cammack recounted her experience from May last year when she found out there was no way her baby’s embryo would survive. According to her, there was also a significant risk to her life if doctors didn’t take action. It was an ectopic pregnancy, the embryo had apparently implanted at the point the fallopian tube meets the uterus, her doctor warned, “If this ruptures, it’ll kill you.”
While she was five weeks pregnant at the time doctors were reluctant to give her a shot of methotrexate as the abortion ban had just come into effect and they feared that they would lose their medical license if they gave Cammack the shot. Cammack tried to put a call through to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis but was unable to get through. Eventually she was able to persuade the hospital staff to provide the medicine.
Of course, not everyone in Cammack’s position would be as lucky. Most ordinary women don’t have DeSantis’s phone number so they would be pretty stuck for options.
This is somehow the Democrats fault
Despite her harrowing experience it seems it hasn’t changed her mind regarding abortion. Cammack is very much still in favor of pro-life and the laws Florida currently has and like a true Republican she blames the Democrats for fearmongering which she claims is why her doctors were so hesitant to provide her the medicine she needed. She also denied that her use of methotrexate didn’t count as an abortion.
“It was absolute fearmongering at its worst… There will be some comments like, ‘Well, thank God we have abortion services,’ even though what I went through wasn’t an abortion.”
Those are some pretty impressive mental gymnastics. How she’s managed to twist the narrative and frame the Democrats as evil would surely do Donald Trump proud. While she claims that she would advocate for a woman to get an abortion in a case like hers, we all know the current laws make it far more difficult for women to receive the proper care. Laws that prioritize the life of an unborn fetus over the life of the mother will always result in unnecessary suffering.
In another case in Georgia, a woman by the name of Adriana Smith was kept on life support so that her unborn child could be delivered. This just proves how these laws dehumanize women, how can anyone expect to get proper care in a system such as this?
