WASHINGTON _ A Republican delegate clearly doesn't want to vote for Donald Trump.
Virginia delegate Carroll Correll Jr. says he'd rather be arrested than suffer that fate. And he's filed a lawsuit claiming that a law requiring him to vote for the presumptive Republican nominee is unconstitutional.
"It's so absurd that the state government compels members of a private organization how to vote in that organization," said Correll, who recently filed the lawsuit with the Virginia attorney general.
Correll supported Sen. Ted Cruz in the primaries and is part of a group of Republicans who want to "free" delegates so they aren't bound to a candidate.
But Howie Lind, the former GOP chairman for the Virginia 10th district, criticized Correll and asked party leaders to remove him from the list of delegates.
"My contention, of which I hope to prove to you, is that Beau Correll is in violation of the 2016 Statement of Intent by openly advocating for a 3rd party candidate to run for President this year," Lind said in a letter.
