Glasgow's 'daft' street names including Hurly Hawkin, Goosedubs and Waldo Street

We've got some truly magnificent tree-lined thoroughfares and avenues in our fair city, their beauty admired by visitors and locals alike.

Take Great Western Road for example, a street road once described as "about the most noble entry to any city in Europe", one road which very much justifies its name.

However, not every street name rolls off the tongue, some don't make sense and others ... are just a little bit 'daft',

We've put together our list of 12 of those streets we can think of:

Goosedubbs

Sounding like how most folk feel on a Sunday morning after a ride on a camel to Seshlehem, the wee lane is opposite the Scotia Bar near the St Enoch Centre and originates from the geese belonging to Provost Aird, who resided in Aird's Lane which runs off it to the Briggait.

Glasgow Street

A Glasgow street named after the city in which the street is already in. We are confused. Located in the Kelvinbridge area of the city.

Hurly Hawkin

A real brain-frier, this Bishopbriggs street sounds like the thing your belly does after you've ate a pizza supper, a pickle, and washed it all down with a can of original recipe Irn Bru.

Spotmouth

The old Saracen's Head Inn was located on the other side of the Spoutmouth, which is situated near the Barrowlands in the Gallowgate area.

Avenue Street

So good they named it twice, this street is near the big Tesco in Dalmarnock.

Stair Street

Yes, a street with stairs on it and nothing else, tucked away off Maryhill Road at Queen's Cross.

Clayslaps Road

Running between Argyle Street and Sauchiehall Street near Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, it holds the distinction of being the shortest street in the city after Celtic Street in Maryhill was extended when the new houses were built.

Butterbiggins Road

With a name that should be the place where Bilbo Baggins first heard stories of the ring and Mordor, the road is located in Govanhill between Victoria Road and Cathcart Road.

Bolivar Terrace

A stone's throw from Hampden on the southside, this street was yes, you guessed it, named after Simon Bolivar, by Glasgow City Council on the 150th anniversary of his birth in 1783.

Madras Street

Sandwiched between Glasgow Green and Bridgeton Post Office, its a wonder how people can phone in a curry without being told to beat it with the takeaway thinking it's a prankie.

Waldo Street

Tucked away near Temple Gasworks behind Morrisons in Anniesland, we are unsure if its named after a ghost town in Canada, a mountain in Maine or Wally from Where's Wally?, who is actually called Waldo (?) in North America.

Sauchiehall Street

We couldn't not feature a street you will hear non-natives pronounce using the 'ch' as in 'cheese' to hilarious effect. A street which derives its name from from being formed on a haugh or meadow where saugh trees grew - as we are sure most people knew.
