Goose Fair visitor used disabled badge of person 230 miles away to park at Forest Rec

Thousands of people visited Goose Fair by bus, tram and foot for the opening weekend. Drivers were told to leave their cars at home since there is no car parking at the Forest Recreation Ground, except for disabled motorists.

However, a number of visitors tried to get away with 'borrowing' blue badges, which allow disabled drivers to park closer to the rides and attractions. The permits cannot be used unless the the holder is present, either as a driver or passenger.

Three badges were seized over the weekend by a Nottingham City Council official. In one case the badge holder was at home, 230 miles away, and another was nearly 50 miles away. Neither were aware their badges were being used.

The compliance and fraud officer said one driver gave a convincing story to car park staff and was allowed to park until, in doubt, they questioned it further. The badge was seized and the driver was asked to leave.

A council spokesman said: "These cases will now be investigated further but action can range from an official warning through to a fine which could ultimately increase to £1,000.

"There are allocated disabled spaces within the Forest Rec site close to the pavilion and it’s important that these are available to those who need them. Council officers will be checking blue badges throughout the event and will take action against anyone either using one which has expired, or which belongs to someone else."
