Goose Fair's Goosey has now landed in Nottingham and we can almost smell the mushy peas

The countdown to this year's Goose Fair is officially on with Nottingham's famous feathered mascot out of hibernation, washed, brushed and back on her iconic bright red perch.

Goosey's team of stylists (Nottingham City Council workmen) arrived at the bird's permanent residence of Woolsthorpe Depot, in Bilborough, before 9am this morning (September 23) to spruce the ol' girl up before her chauffeur driven trip to Mansfield Road roundabout, where she'll stay for two weeks.

In charge of the operation today, and for the past 37 years, was Tony Papkiewicz, the senior manager for the city centre and Goosey's number one fan.

"1982 was our first meeting, the start of the love affair," laughs Tony, who along with his team washes, brushes, transports and maintains the half a tonne statue every year.

Lifted into place with a crane, the 6'6" bird is then secured using screws which are accessed using the small door at the base of the statue.

The operation takes around two hours but once the crews have left the site they still check in on her, which is pretty easy as the same team manage the Forest Recreation Ground during the Goose Fair festivities, including assembling rides and completing the two and a half day clear up once the fair is over.

"She ends up getting covered in all sorts," says Tony, "people have dressed her up in hats, coats, scarves..."

Indeed last year passersby would have noticed Goosey sporting a purple jumper, although this was a legitimate makeover organised by the Business Improvement District (BID) to celebrate the city's Purple Flag status.

There are currently no known plans for further Goosey couture on the roundabout, although this morning one of the workmen did confess to taking a snap of the bird sporting a pair of bunny ears.

Taking place from Wednesday, October 2 to Sunday, October 6, visitors can expect the usual dose of  rollercoasters, amusements and cocks on sticks at this year's Goose Fair.

Every autumn, the Forest Rec hosts more than 500 attractions, from the latest white knuckle experiences, family rides and the old favourites including waltzers, carousels and hook-a-duck.

As always, admission to the ground is free and discount vouchers are now on sale in advance online or families can wait to grab their coupons when they appear in the Nottingham Post from Monday, September 30 to Wednesday, October 2.
