Google tool measures how closely Queen fans can mimic Freddie Mercury's voice

From ‘We Will Rock You’ to ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, some of the catchiest songs in music history were sung by Queen legend, Freddie Mercury.

While Mercury’s voice had a unique sound, Google is now challenging Queen fans to see if they can mimic it.

The tech giant has launched The Freddie Meter - an AI tool that measure how close your voice is to Mercury’s.

To use the tool, users must first select one of four Queen songs - Bohemian Rhapsody, Don’t Stop Me Now, Somebody to Love or We Are the Champions - before singing it in their best Freddie Mercury voice into their computer or smartphone microphone.

The tool will then analyse your pitch, timbre and melody, before assigning you a score of 0 to 100.

Google explained: “Google Creative Lab and Google Research created FreddieMeter using new on-device machine learning models, and it’s been trained on Freddie’s isolated vocals as well as samples of people trying to sing like Freddie.”

While the tool is no doubt lots of fun, it’s been released in support of an important cause - the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

Google said: “[It was] released in support of Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity founded by Brian May, Roger Taylor and Jim Beach to raise awareness and funds for the fight against HIV/AIDS."

The tool can be used on desktop, Android or iPhone and can be accessed here .
