Google to delete thousands of Gmail accounts by the end of the year

Some people who have Gmail will soon lose access to their accounts if they do not act.

It comes as Google is set to delete thousands of Gmail accounts, according to Hull Live.

And as a result, people will be left without access to other platforms such as YouTube which may be tied to their email.

Accounts will be removed from December in a bid to tighten security with the DailyMail reporting that accounts will be deleted if users rely on compromised passwords, alongside accounts that have not been used for two years.

Google said: "People want the products and services they use online to be safe and secure. Which is why we have invested in technology and tools to protect our users from security threats, like spam, phishing scams and account hijacking.

"Even with these protections, if an account hasn't been used for an extended period of time, it is more likely to be compromised.

"This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or re-used passwords that may have been compromised, haven't had two factor authentication set up, and receive fewer security checks by the user."

The first deletions will be accounts that were created and then never used. Google says it will send notifications before deleting accounts.

You can protect your account from deletion by signing in, and sending an email.

Google said: "We are going to roll this out slowly and carefully, with plenty of notice."
