Google takes aim at Samsung - first look at radical new Android phone launching next week

Samsung may rule the roost when it comes to foldable smartphones but the Korean technology firm is about to get some fresh competition from Google.

Rumours have been swirling around the web for months that a Pixel Fold was in the works but now Google has given fans their first look at what coming next from their in-house tech team.

A short teaser video - with the tagline "May the Fold be with you" - has just been posted on Google’s YouTube platform and it reveals the new Pixel Fold in all of its glory.

Although full specs aren’t dished out in the clip, little else is left to the imagination with Google showing off the design which includes a front cover screen. This then opens like a book to reveal a bigger and much more expansive tablet-style screen. It's expected that this unfolded panel will measure in at over 7 inches which should give users plenty of space for gaming, answering emails and surfing the web.

On the rear case is a triple-lens camera system and it appears the fold will be aimed at the premium end of the market with this device appearing to be covered in glossy glass and a shiny aluminium finish.

Google will probably reveal full specs during its I/O showcase on Wednesday, May 10 but we’re expecting the Fold to be powered by Google’s own Tensor processor which should make it pretty powerful.

The price could be interesting with early reports suggesting it will cost $1,700 (£1,350). There’s no word on how much UK owners will have to pay but hopefully, Google will undercut Samsung and make owning a foldable a little more affordable.

Mirror Online will be bringing you all the news live from Google I/O so watch this space if you want to know more. As well as revealing its new phone, we're also expecting updates on the Android operating system as well. Google also loves to throw in a few surprises so it could be a feature-packed keynote from its HQ in Mountain View California.

The event kicks off from 6pm BST on May 10.
