Google's new budget Android phone is way better than its price suggest

Fancy a new Android phone but don’t want to pay flagship prices? Google may have just what you are looking for thanks to the launch of its new Pixel 7a.

This low-cost call maker has just been unveiled at the firm’s I/O event in California and it looks mightily impressive for the price.

For just £449 you get a smartphone with a 6.1-inch screen, full access to 5G data speeds and a fast refilling battery that’s compatible with wireless charging. This power pack also gets Google’s Adaptive technology which allows it to learn your favourite apps, so it doesn't waste power on ones that you rarely use.

Thanks to that function - and an Extreme Battery Saver mode - users could see 72 hours of usage without needing to go near a plug.

On the rear case is a dual-lens camera that’s packed with all the usual clever features from Google’s photography team including a useful night mode which can take stunning shots when the sun goes down.

Owners also get extra features including Photo Unblur which sharpens things after they've been taken and the Magic Eraser which gets rid of folks that may have photobombed your family snaps.

The next thing that will please owners is how tough the Pixel 7a is with Google promising that this is their most durable A-Series phone yet.

Thanks to IP67 protection, it can handle water and dust plus there’s tough Corning Gorilla Glass to help it survive drops and falls.

Head under that recycled aluminium, glass and plastic body and you’ll find Google’s impressive Tensor G2 chip inside. That’s the very same brain found in the more expensive Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro (a phone that costs almost twice the price!).

Along with being pretty quick, the G2 can power Google's advanced machine learning and speech recognition, plus owners will get better AI for improved audio on phone calls.

If all of those specs and low price have got you excited then the Pixel 7a goes on sale soon in four colours including Sea (a type of blue) and Coral (a shade of red).
