It’s Pi Day! Hooray for math! And nerds.
You probably know Pi as π, or 3.14 (which is why we celebrate on March 14, or 3/14.) Pi is technically the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, but it’s also an irrational number, meaning the decimal has no end or repeating pattern.
And what would America be if not for our love of irrational things?
Pi is one of the most important numbers in mathematics, but also it is a homophone for a delicious dessert and, wow, there’s just a lot going on here, truly.
Google has marked the occasion of Pi Day this year with a little Easter egg of a game on its calculator (which can be found by, yup, googling the word calculator.)
If you click that glittering Pi symbol up in the left-hand corner, it will show you the first three digits of Pi: 3.14.
You respond by clicking those digits in order. It then shows you four digits of Pi. You type them to move onto the next level. Then, five digits. So on and so forth, presumably forever if you’re good enough. Give it a try!
