Google's heartbreaking Super Bowl advert leaves viewers in tears as it's so relatable

With price tags of up to £4.3m, the 30-second Super Bowl adverts bring high expectations - and this year was no different.

Many fans tune in for the commercials alone, and one of the biggest successes this year came from Google with their offering 'Loretta'.

The clip tells the story of an elderly man who asks his Google Assistant to remember details about his life with his late wife.

What starts off as an innocent Google search - 'how not to forget' - soon turns into a montage of sweet details that the old man had asked Google to remember about her.

He says: "Hey Google, show me photos of me and Loretta".

The elderly man asked his Google assistant to show him memories of him and his late wife (Google)

The first image that the smart speaker brings up is of the two of them hugging tightly, surrounded by family photos.

And as the next picture comes up, you hear the man laughing warmly and saying: "Remember Loretta hated my moustache".

Each time Google brings up a new memory, the voice asks it to remember these details, which then receives the response: "Ok, I'll remember that."

The inspiration behind the ad comes from a Google employee's granddad.

The employee said: "At 85, to an audience of millions, he’ll be making his film debut. We couldn’t be happier for him”.

You could see the different days that the man spoke to Google about Loretta (Google)

Fans were quick to respond to the ad on Twitter, with one writing: "Google demonstrated that ads can be about more than just overpaid celebs and cheese-stained fingers. This was absolutely moving and beautiful, and for anyone who has experienced love and loss".

Another wrote: "Google’s ad was inspired by a real grandfather. I just lost my favorite person, my grandma a month ago and everyday I continue to remember things about her. She would’ve loved that commercial. Chills. Absolutely brilliant."

The video has been viewed more than 11.5 million times since it aired in last nights Super Bowl.

Amazon's Alexa also raised awareness of organic farmland with Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Murray featured in a 'Groundhog Day' recreation for Jeep and Microsoft starred Katie Sowers, the first woman to coach in the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in the tense match.
