Google Pixel 4: First images of the new Google smartphone leaked by … Google

First images of the new Google Pixel 4 point to the phone having two rear camera lenses (Picture: Google)

We know a Google Pixel 4 smartphone is arriving later this year. Why? Because Google leaked the first images of the phone on its Twitter account yesterday.

Hardware companies are often faced with months of leaked images and information about their new devices, the first leaked images of the next iPhone started coming out in January, about nine months before the phone will be released.

Companies have started to try and get ahead of the leaks recently by releasing specific details such as the power a screen might have or how a camera setup may look in the weeks leading up to a launch.

Yet, it’s quite unusual for a company to go straight ahead and confirm a phone, and what it will look like, about four months before it is expected to launch.

But here we are. So what do we know about the new Pixel 4? It’s going to have a very interesting camera set up by the looks of things – with at least two lenses on the back and a third sensor of some kind. Usually, Google has maintained its phones can take amazing pictures with only one lens, which they certainly can, unlike the four or even five lenses you can find on the back of other smartphones. Hopefully, this new lens will be an ultra wide-angle lens.

In addition, there is no rear fingerprint scanner on the back of the device. Rumours at the moment point to the device having facial recognition, something that has been missing for the Pixel range. Face authentication settings have appeared in the beta for Android Q, the next Android software, so it seems very likely that the lack of a fingerprint scanner means Google will be introducing its own form of FaceID to the Pixel.

Other leaks point to the phone sporting Qualcomm Snapdragon’s 855 chipset, which does have 5G capabilities, though it's unsure as to whether the next Pixel range will feature a 5G phone at the moment. The larger Pixel 4 XL could also come with 6GB of RAM and there will be no headphone jack on this phone, Google is keeping that for the 3a range.
