Google Maps, YouTube and Gmail will stop working on millions of phones from today

Google Maps, YouTube and Gmail and other popular apps won't work on millions of phones from today after a massive update.

US tech giant Google announced the news, saying that the update will cause devices using Android 2.3 to lose access to the swathe of popular applications.

If you sign into your device after September 27, you may get username or password errors when you try to use Google products.

Among the apps to be halted on the operating system are YouTube, Google Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more.

According to Birmingham Live, that particular branch of the US tech giant's operating system launched in December 2010 but Google will now withdraw support for it.

The move is "part of ongoing efforts to keep our users safe", according to the Silicon Valley tech company.

Owners of the following phones are affected, including the Sony Xperia Advance and the Lenovo K800.

Owners of the Sony Xperia Go, Vodafone Smart II, Samsung Galaxy S2, Sony Xperia P, LG Spectrum, and Sony Xperia S are also impacted.

Device owners using LG Prada 3.0, HTC Velocity, HTC Evo 4G, Motorola Fire, and Motorola XT532 phones are also told they cannot update.

It comes amid reports WhatsApp will also stop working on a swathe of Android and Apple devices later this year.

Google explain: "As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our users safe, Google will no longer allow sign-in on Android devices that run Android 2.3.7 or lower starting September 27, 2021.

"You will be able to sign into your account with a newer Android version (3.0 or newer). If your device has the ability to update to a newer Android version (3.0+), we advise you to do so."
