Google Maps thinks Wales is still in lockdown and we all have to stay at home

Google Maps has been guiding its users from A to B since it was launched in 2005.

The web mapping platform has users from across the country reliant on it for the most up-to-date travel information, including latest road closures, new routes and any Covid-related travel advice.

But for some reason, Google Maps seems to think Wales is still in a national lockdown. You can read more about lockdown restrictions in Wales here.

Wales officially ended its national lockdown, on March 13, 2021, with 'stay local' orders lifted not long after on March 26.

However, when planning a route within Wales, or to somewhere outside it, we are instead being to stay at home, a message we haven't heard for months.

Plot a route between Swansea and Preston, for example, and a message appears advising people taking this route that a national lockdown is in place and to stay home.

The message reads: "National lockdown: stay at home. If you need to travel, use quiet time and routes."

As we know, Wales hasn't been in a lockdown for nearly eight months.

We tested a couple of routes to see if this lockdown message applies to just Wales or if other areas are being told not to travel too.

When planning a route from Preston to Blackpool, no massage appears.

The same can be said for routes planned to and from Scotland from England.

Maps showing routes from Preston to Edinburgh and Edinburgh to Glasgow have no lockdown warnings in sight. However, a route from Edinburgh to Swansea once again displays the stay at home message.

Wales Online has approached Google Maps for comment but it is yet to respond.
