Google Maps is testing a new feature that warns users when their taxi driver is taking the "scenic route" to rack up a higher fare.
The new off-route feature, spotted by tech site XDA Developers , reportedly sends an alert to your phone every time you get sidetracked from the intended course by 500 meters.
As well as preventing unscrupulous cab drivers taking you for a ride, the feature could also be useful when you're driving yourself, to let you know if you've taken a wrong turn.
According to screenshots captured by XDA Developers, the "Stay safer" option will appear in the pull-up section at the bottom of the screen, after you have selected your route.
Tapping the button will bring up a menu that allows you to "Get off-route alerts".
There is also an option to "Share live trip", which allows your friends to see your route and track your progress in real time.
Once the feature is activated, a message will appear at the top of your screen informing you that you are on route, and the time and distance to your destination.
The feature is currently being tested in India, but Google could presumably decide to roll it out more widely if the trial is a success.
Last month, Google rolled out a new feature in Google Maps that alerts drivers when they are , bringing it into line with sat nav systems from TomTom and Garmin.
The feature has been available in the US since January, but is now also available throughout the UK.
