Google launches Nest Audio smart speaker to rival the Amazon Echo

Google has launched a new smart speaker to rival the Amazon Echo.

The smart speaker is called Nest Audio, and was unveiled at Google ’s Launch Night In event this evening.

The speaker is is oblong in shape, with curved edges and a flat base which allows you to stand the speaker upright.

Touch controls can be found in the top half of the speaker, with volume adjusted by tapping the edges, and play/pause buttons in the very top.

The back of the speaker features a Mic Switch, allowing you to turn the mic off with the slide of a button.

Google explained: "Microphones are built into Nest Audio, so you can use your voice to ask the Google Assistant for help, make calls and more.

"To physically turn off the microphones, slide the mic switch on the back of Nest Audio. This switch, which can't be accessed remotely, makes the microphones completely inoperable.

"When the mics are turned of, you'll see four orange lights on the front of your Nest Audio. To turn the microphones back on, you'll need to slide the switch back."

While it’s fairly small in size, it’s weighty, coming in at around 1kg.

And while some rumours suggested that the speaker would be wireless, unfortunately Google has confirmed that that’s not the case.

The speaker can be controlled via the Google Home smartphone app, meaning you can simply ask your questions via Google Assistant.

The Nest Audio will retail at £89, and is available from October 5.
