Google has launched two big AI-backed initiatives to expand access to mental health care and improve treatment outcomes. The tech giant wants to use AI to scale effective mental health services, especially in the low- and middle-income countries. The company has partnered with leading organizations to focus on both practical support today and long-term research for future treatments.
The first initiative is a field guide created in collaboration with Grand Challenges Canada and the McKinsey Health Institute. This guide is designed for mental health organizations and lays out how to responsibly integrate AI into their practices. It includes examples and strategies for using AI to improve clinician training, personalize support, improve data collection, and streamline workflows.
The second initiative is a long-term research effort in partnership with Google DeepMind, Google for Health, and the Wellcome Trust. This multi-year investment focuses on developing AI tools that can improve how anxiety, depression, and psychosis are measured and treated. The research aims to create more precise and personalized assessments of mental health conditions, with the potential to support new forms of treatment, including novel medications.
The move adds to a growing trend of tech companies investing in mental health innovation, with AI seen as a key tool for reaching underserved populations and reducing the burden on healthcare systems worldwide.
However, that’s not all from Google. The tech giant is also developing a new Deep Think feature for its Gemini 2.5 Pro model. It is expected to give extra processing muscle for complex tasks. The upcoming model is likely to offer more compute power for math-heavy queries, coding, and multimodal reasoning. According to the benchmark data, Deep Think gives a 15% improvement in math-related tasks compared to the standard Gemini 2.5 Pro.
