Google I/O: Artificial Intelligence To Rule The Day With Gemini, AI Agents

Alphabet hosts the Google I/O conference for software developers starting at 1 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, with Chief Executive Sundar Pichai giving the keynote address. Heading into the event, Google stock was down about 12% in 2025.

On the stock market today, Google stock was about even at 167.29. Investors can watch the Google I/O event at this website.

Meanwhile, the internet search business has been a worry for Google investors amid new artificial-intelligence-driven competition from OpenAI's ChatGPT and others. ChatGPT delivers answers to search queries, while Google's business model has been based on providing web links.

At last year's Google I/O, the company announced the release of AI Overview, formerly called Search Generative Experience." Google began deploying AI Overviews in the U.S. in mid-2024, with conversational summaries topping links for many search queries.

The AI Overviews system uses Google's in-house Gemini AI model.

Ramping Up Search Business

"Google is fighting back against AI disruption through its Gemini AI services that go across its entire portfolio including search," said Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives in a report. "We believe Gemini is help closing the gap vs. ChatGPT and Google I/O is a key event to highlight AI innovations and technology coming to the Google developer world. We believe Google is heading into its innovation phase of AI and the worries around search days in the rear view mirror are way overdone."

In March, Google unveiled its new artificial intelligence model, Gemini 2.5. Early reviews have been positive.

At Google I/O, the company is expected to showcase a wider array of capabilities powered by the new AI model involving "AI agents." They include Project Mariner, Project Astra, Jules and Deep Research.

In late 2024, software makers began shifting their marketing strategy away from generative AI "copilots" to autonomous, goal-driven AI agents.

Technical Ratings For Google Stock

Copilots — basically conversational chatbot interfaces — aim to improve worker productivity but rely on human prompts. Agents execute multistep tasks on behalf of users by solving problems and taking action.

Project Astra involves a real-time multimodal AI assistant while Project Mariner is a browser agent used on personal computers. Also, Jules is a coding agent for software bugs. Meanwhile, Deep Research is an assistant that can dig into complex topics and create reports.

On the Q1 earnings call with analysts, Google said AI Overviews now has over 1.5 billion monthly active users.

Further, Alphabet stock holds an IBD Composite Rating of 86 out of a best possible 99. IBD's Composite Rating is a blend of key fundamental and technical metrics to help investors gauge a stock's strengths. The best growth stocks have a Composite Rating of 90 or better.

Google stock holds an Accumulation/Distribution Rating of B. That institutional ownership rating analyzes price and volume changes in a stock over the past 13 weeks of trading. A+ signifies heavy institutional buying; E means heavy selling. Think of a C grade as neutral.
