Google Gemini's Guided Learning feature makes AI actually check if you understand — here's how it works

Gemini logo on smartphone.

Google Gemini's Guided Learning changes passive AI interactions into active learning sessions. Rather than simply receiving information dumps, this feature creates a back-and-forth conversation where Gemini teaches you step-by-step and checks your understanding along the way.

The tool works like having a digital tutor. It breaks down complex topics into manageable chunks, asks questions to ensure comprehension, and adapts explanations based on your responses. This helps you retain information better than traditional AI Q&A sessions.

While the feature can occasionally lose track of conversations or misinterpret responses, it generally provides a more engaging way to learn new subjects. Here's how to use Guided Learning.

1. Activate Guided Learning mode

Open the Gemini app or website and click Tools in the chatbox to access the available feature options. Next, look for the Guided Learning option and select it to activate the interactive tutoring mode.

Once activated, ask Gemini to teach you about any topic using natural language. For example, type "I want to learn about machine learning" or "Teach me about photosynthesis" to begin the guided session.

Gemini will present you with multiple starting points for your chosen topic. This allows you to select which aspect interests you most or matches your current knowledge level.

2. Engage with the interactive questions

Read each explanation Gemini provides and answer the follow-up questions it asks to check your understanding. These questions require you to think about and process the information rather than just reading passively.

Getting answers wrong isn't a problem. Gemini will provide additional explanations and try different approaches to help you understand the concept. The tool adapts its teaching style based on your responses.

When answering hard questions, stay focused on the topic at hand when answering questions. Gemini can sometimes misinterpret responses and assume you're starting a new conversation.

3. Work through the complete lesson

Continue the back-and-forth dialogue until you've covered the entire topic Gemini has outlined for your learning session. The AI will guide you through each step logically before moving to the next concept.

If you get stuck or if Gemini's explanations don't make sense, ask for clarification. The feature works best when you actively engage and ask follow-up questions about confusing points.

If you notice the conversation getting off track, politely redirect Gemini back to the original topic by referencing what you were previously learning about. This helps maintain focus throughout the session.
