Google Gemini is now heading to fridges — and it might actually be useful

  • Samsung has announced a new AI-powered fridge
  • It's the first time we'll have seen Gemini on an appliance
  • The AI should save money and reduce food waste

AI chatbots are continuing to make their way into more and more devices, and Google Gemini is now heading to fridges: it's going to show up in the new Bespoke AI Refrigerator Family Hub that Samsung is going to unveil at the CES 2026 show in January.

According to Samsung (via Android Authority), putting Gemini inside the new fridge will "simplify everyday tasks" and "elevate the overall kitchen experience" – and based on some video demos, this might actually be something you'll want in your kitchen.

Gemini will be able to take advantage of a tiny camera inside the fridge to recognize types of food and how much you've got of it. From there you can get advice on what dishes you can make, what you need to buy in, and when food might start to go off.

Samsung has built this AI Vision into some of its fridges before, but with Gemini on board, the new model is going to be able to recognize a wider variety of food more accurately, as well as returning smarter responses to your queries.

Voice control and energy use

The on-board AI is also going to enable voice control – so you can politely ask the fridge to open its doors if your hands are full – and it'll even manage energy use by tweaking the interior cooling to match how the fridge is used and how it's stocked.

All of this sounds positive, and should mean less food waste and lower electricity bills. You can see some of the features outlined in the demo video above, though it somewhat confusingly mentions Bixby, so perhaps there's some rebranding to do there.

Samsung has also announced that Google Gemini will be making its way to a new Bespoke AI Wine Cellar as well, which is based on similar ideas: the AI can label and track your bottles, and direct you to the perfect bottle for every meal.

CES 2026 is happening from January 6 to January 9, and as usual will be held in Las Vegas. We'll get to see a host of new gadgets and appliances at the event, as the biggest companies in tech show off their wares for the coming year.
