Google enhances Google Photos: New features ease photo sharing

Google CEO Sundar Pichai attends AI forum in Washington

Google Photos is rolling out a significant new feature that enhances the way users can access their pictures and videos stored on the platform. This new feature allows users to access their Google Photos content from within other apps in a simpler and more secure manner.

A recent update on February 17th reveals that Google is introducing Google Photos support to Android's built-in photo picker. The Android photo picker provides a secure method for third-party apps to access specifically selected photos and videos stored both locally and in the cloud. This prevents any unauthorized access to your entire photo library by ensuring that only the images you choose to share are accessible to these apps.

Previously, the photo picker only allowed access to locally stored content on devices. However, with this update, users can now access images backed up on Google Photos through the photo picker. This update combines both local and cloud-based images into a single interface, with the inclusion of any albums created on Google Photos. Favorites from cloud-based images are displayed in a dedicated collection at the top of the photo picker.

While the use of the Android photo picker is currently optional and support among apps is limited, the benefits of this upgrade include making it easier to upload Google Photos content to various apps without constant switching between different applications. Despite the current lack of widespread app support, Google aims to expand the usage of the photo picker to provide a seamless experience for users across different platforms.

Furthermore, Google is also working on another update for Google Photos that will allow users to manually override the automatic document categorizations within the app. This feature aims to enhance the organization of documents by enabling users to move misidentified documents to the correct category. By providing users with more control over document categorization, Google Photos continues to improve user experience and efficiency.

As these updates continue to roll out, Google Photos users can look forward to a more streamlined and customizable experience when accessing and managing their photos, videos, and documents. Stay tuned for further enhancements and features that Google may introduce to further enhance the functionality and convenience of Google Photos.
