Anyone with Google Chrome told to make urgent check

Google has issued a warning to every Chrome user over a "critical" danger that you need to check.

The multinational technology giant has experienced a number of attacks this year, and has now reported a further hack of which Windows, Mac and Linux users are all affected.

Chrome’s massive two billion-strong user base needs to take immediate action, Forbes reports.

Google has only given limited information about the new attacks but has said it rates the latest hack’s threat level as critically dangerous:

CVE-2021-4098: Rated critical, an insufficient data validation vulnerability in Mojo.

CVE-2021-4099: Rated high, a use after free vulnerability in Swiftshader.

CVE-2021-4100: Rated high, an object lifecycle issue in ANGLE.

CVE-2021-4101: Rated high, a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in Swiftshader.

CVE-2021-4102, the high-rated use after free vulnerability in the V8 engine for which an exploit has already been seen in the wild.

Google is now imploring people to download a new update and ensure their search engines are up to date.

It said: "Google is aware of reports that an exploit... exists in the wild."

Google has released a new version of Chrome: 96.0.4664.110 - though it warns this “will roll out over the coming days/weeks” which means you may not be able to protect yourself immediately.

To check if you are protected, navigate to Settings > Help > About Google Chrome.

If your Chrome browser is listed as 96.0.4664.110 or higher, you are safe. If the update is not yet available for your browser, it is important that you check regularly for the new version.

Once you have updated your browser, you must restart your computer because the browser is not protected until you do so.
