Stradivarius a non-runner in Goodwood Cup due to ground as Trueshan becomes hot favourite

Stradivarius has been withdrawn from today's feature Goodwood Cup because of the testing nature of the conditions.

The three-time Gold Cup winner was the 2-1 favourite to win the Group 1 contest for a record-breaking fifth time but connections have decided to withdraw him after walking the track after the conclusion of the first race.

That venue has been hit with almost 60mm of rain since Sunday afternoon and the ground is officially described as soft, heavy in places.

Thady Gosden, who shares the trainers' licence with his father John, told Racing TV that they had decided the best course of action was to give the race a miss.

"It's just a great shame that the ground has gone so much in the last two days," he said.

John Gosden added: "We made the mistake of running him on the wrong ground at Longchamp and Ascot. There's no point making that mistake again. We'll now point him towards York next month."

Spanish Mission, who was a general 6-1 chance in the morning, has also been taken out of the day's feature, leaving eight to go to post.

Goodwood Cup betting is now headed by Trueshan who is the evens favourite with Grosvenor Sport to win his first Group 1 prize.

The winning rider in the opening race, Will Buick, gave his verdict on conditions to ITV Racing after easing home aboard Migration (2-1f).

"Slow ground, it's a real test" he said.

"This fellow didn't mind it. That's his trip. A bit of a typical Goodwood race, he picked up well for me. He's a nice horse."
