Popular pick Alcohol Free finished best to defeat Poetic Flare in the 2021 Qatar Sussex Stakes.
The well-backed 7-2 shot was settled towards the back of the field by Oisin Murphy and crept into contention as the favourite raced for the line.
Despite drifting to the right and bumping Poetic Flare slightly, Andrew Balding's charge ran on with gusto to triumph by a length-and-three-quarters.
Murphy, clear in his pursuit of three jockeys' championships, told ITV Racing: “She really can be a handful in the mornings – it can be tough work.
"But she’s so, so talented – and what a thrill I got from that! I’ve won this race before on Lightning Spear, and then last year it went all wrong (when fourth on Kameko).”
Snow Lantern (6-1) finished third under Jamie Spencer.
Paddy Power make the winner 20-1 (from 25-1) for the Juddmonte International at York next month.
Balding said: “It’s a mile and a quarter and it’s a hard ask but she could well end up there.
“It’s a privilege to have her. It was a rough race and I’m sure there were hard luck stories, but I’m sure she was the best horse on the day.”
