I found this book absolutely amazing. Set during the second world war, the main character is a young boy named William who is evacuated to the countryside to live with a grieving widower named Tom.
Having been abused and beaten by his mother, it takes William a while to adapt to a life with more freedom and happiness.
While living with Tom, he discovers a skill he never knew he had, and at the local school he quickly makes new friends. But will this happiness endure? Or will he have to go back to the city and have to cope with being abused by his mother?
This book gripped me from the very start! I couldn’t put it down! It was very touching how Will and Tom’s relationship grew, and you really feel sympathy for Will as he has to adapt to difficult changes in his life. I really recommend this book to everyone!
